Pillow Talk w/ Hannah: Owning Your Femme Energy at the Gym!

Pillow Talk w/ Hannah: Owning Your Femme Energy at the Gym!

Hi, any advice on what to wear in the gym as a crossdresser. Which underwear? Which workout gear?

This is very much dependent on what you are comfortable with wearing and what you are comfortable being seen in.  For the purpose of this question, I am going to refer to clothes as either "boy" or "femme".  Boy clothes are clothes that are mostly worn by men and femme clothes are mostly worn by girls.  When I go to the gym, I wear femme black leggings and a boy t-shirt.  When I exercise outside, such as going for a bike ride, I pair my femme black leggings with a femme cycling jersey.

It would be helpful to know specifically where you are when it comes to identifying as a crossdresser.  Are you a "I-wear-panties-and-I-would-be-mortified-if-someone-found-out-crossdresser" or are you a "I-rock-stilettos-and-makeup-and-beautiful-dresses-crossdresser"?  Granted these are on different ends of the spectrum and many of us are somewhere between these points.

If you are the former, then you may want to go for a more subtle look and wear items that are not *overly* femme.  If you are the latter, then emulating other girls at the gym might be the way to go.

I should also clarify my gender identity and gender presentation.  There are several labels I identify with, but I feel "bi-gender" is the most appropriate.  What I mean is that I do not live "full time".  Depending on what I am doing or interacting with, I am either wearing a dress and impossibly high heels, or I am wearing the most boring tie and slacks imaginable.  When I am presenting as masculine, I am always wearing panties (and usually a matching camisole) under my boy clothes.  If I am not at work(or somewhere that "he" has to be) I am usually wearing femme clothes.  As I type this, I am  wearing panties, femme black leggings, a white camisole, and a cute femme shirt.  At first glance my top looks to be a boy shirt but if you look closely, you can tell it's femme.

What you wear when you workout or when you are in public (or working out in public) depends on how much staring you are comfortable with.  What I mean is that if I were to go to the gym in male mode and wear a sports bra and pink leggings, I am going to get stared at.  Not necessarily in a mean way, but you have to admit most guys are not wearing a sports bra and pink leggings on the treadmill and people tend to take a second glance when they see someone wearing something that isn't very common.  Again, wear what you are comfortable being SEEN in.  You may not CARE what others THINK of you, but people tend to stare when a boy wears "girl clothes" or when someone wears something that is very out of place.  I have two gorgeous floor length ball gowns but people will stare at me if I wore them to a Starbucks.  I don't care what people think of me, but after a while the constant staring and double takes gets a little old.  Of course, your tolerance for gawkers may vary.

I choose my underwear based on what else I am wearing and what I am doing.  If I am wearing my breast forms, I choose a pocket bra so I can insert my forms into the bra.  If I am wearing something tight (which happens a LOT) then I wear a gaff or a tucking panty.  Although I only exercise presenting as male, I did a yoga class once in "girl mode" and wore a sports bra and pink leggings (which was super fun).

Love, Hannah

I tend to wear tight leggings and tops at the gym as the look kind of covers both bases. Not overtly male but also not completely femme. I’ve never been brave enough to wear a crop top or sports bra there although I have often thought about it. I do wear crop tops etc when exercising at home either on my exercise bike or during my yoga sessions. I do however change into my panties and usually a cami in the gym changing room after my workouts and I have never had any negative comments directed at me because I do.

Thank you Hannah for your honest and open opinion on clothing for the gym. As your rightly stated, the level of femme clothing is very much down to the individual. I always wear my femme pantys at the gym. I have no issue with other people observing me. I make no secret of wearing them in the changing room. Sometimes a camisole too. Keep up the blog xx

Great blog as always Hannah! I wear legging to the gym with a t shirt. The leggings are great and provide compression which helps with blood flow (Body Aware, XDress sister company makes a great line of workout gear!). I see many males at the gym wearing legging but they also wear shorts which obviously covers things up. I like the legging as they accentuate the muscles in your body and show off great assets everywhere. I typically choose a darker color but have ventured into more “femme” colors like a white or a pink. Either way, I love wearing leggings and encourage everyone to do the same! As for what panties I wear under them, I don’t! Commando is great! I do use Body Glide (an anti chafing roll on) which is important. As for shirts, they can be femme or masculine tanks or tees. I usually go with what is more comfortable and that varies by clothing manufacturer. I have tried sports bras but can’t find a good one that fits right. Either way, it is importantly to keep in shape and stay healthy! Hope this helps!
